A Little About Ava Henseler
Hello! My name is Ava Henseler and I would love to introduce myself. I am from Saint Paul, Minnesota and I have two younger sisters along with an older brother. My brother Max is a Junior at Xavier University, my sister, Margaux, is a senior this year. We were born exactly two years apart! My youngest sister, Bridget, is a freshman this year and just got her driver’s permit. I also have a ten year old standard poodle named Isla. She likes playing with frogs and loves to go on walks around the lake. Throughout my life, I have been exposed to many different viewpoints and forms of media that have influenced the way that I see the world. I am taking the Digital Foundations course to further explore media outlets and to deeply understand their agendas. I like looking at news articles from different sites to ensure I am not getting all my information from a single source. It is difficult to unlearn something once you read and understand it, so I like to broaden my resources to make sure I know I am not getting false information.
Personally, I like to be on my phone. I like knowing what is going on in the news and with my friends and family. It can be frustrating, though, to see news that other people post that seems biased, misleading, or entirely fake. Reposts of news articles or facebook posts that seem undeniably misleading can cause panic and the spread of misinformation. Journalists and news media are trying to spread information to their consumers, yet there always seems to be a dramatic aspect to grab the viewers attention better. I think that some news sources can spread accurate and helpful news, but there are others that mainly use a scare or shock factor to get views or clicks.
I have very little programming training. I have a bit of HTML basics, but I would like to learn more! It seems like a very helpful skill to have, especially when writing online! I think that there are a lot of pros and cons of having such an interconnected world. Always knowing what is going on in the world and what everyone is thinking can expose people to the reality of society and its joys, but can also reveal its horrors. I like to think that being able to access any information at the touch of a button is a blessing for the world. The ability to know what is going on at the other side of the world, in your own government, or even in your neighborhood can make people feel less isolated. Yet, the media is the one who controls what information is given out to the public. They have the opportunity to do real work or to manipulate the story for financial, political, or personal gain.
